Yoga has been around for thousands of years and has hardly changed over this time.
Pilates is a newer exercise programme that has been around for approximately 100 years.
In yoga we work with the mind and the body as a whole. We work with postures that help to tone and lengthen the muscles, stimulate the internal organs and the nervous system. These include standing postures, forward and backward bending postures, twisting and balancing postures. We also work with the breath to help calm the mind. The mind and the breath are intricately linked so focusing on the breath and learning to control it eventually helps to bring the mind under control.
All posture work can be modified for all body shapes and types so yoga is suitable for anyone.
Pilates is an exercise programme developed by Joseph Pilates who wanted to help people to take control of their bodies, health and wellbeing.
The exercises are more centred around strength and control in the core muscles to maintain muscle tone and alignment. Pilates will help to tone your muscles and help to regain or retain good posture and breathing.
How can this help you?
No matter what we are aiming for in this modern day manic world, everyone can benefit from studying yoga and Pilates. The professional sportsman can benefit from increased strength and concentration. Dancers can benefit from greater body awareness and control. And all us everyday people can benefit from a life with less stress, a calmer mind, and a more toned and flexible body.
Along with healthy eating habits yoga and Pilates can help you to tone up and lose weight. Yoga can help instil confidence and help to beat conditions such as depression, insomnia, muscular aches and pains, and can help to ease joints that are suffering from stiffness and with care can help arthritis sufferers.
